The Foundation of Oral Health This Holiday Season

Posted .

Your toothbrush is the foundation of your continued oral health this holiday season. Take care of it by following these simple tips!

The American Dental Association suggests that you replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. With so many holiday gifting opportunities, this is a great time to replace the brushes of your whole family! This is a great time to finally get that favorite colored toothbrush, or a new electric toothbrush. Either work great, as long as you are using proper technique.

Be sure to store your toothbrush in an open area, and away from other toothbrushes. If you must store them near one another, make sure the toothbrush heads don’t touch, as that spreads germs between toothbrushes. This is called “cross-contamination.”

Unfortunately, the winter season often also means “cold and flu season.” It is especially important to take care of your mouth when you are sick. Additionally, some people prefer to replace their toothbrushes after being sick. Though it is unlikely you will get yourself sick again from the germs on your brush (as long as you have a healthy immune system), it is possible that your toothbrush may touch other toothbrushes. This would contaminate them, and spread the illness.
